My friend John commissioned this quilt - we went to church camp together when we were wee little kids. The ties were his grandfathers and he wanted two quilts made from them. I happily accepted because this quilt has been on my bucket list for a long time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S0VpwbjM2rA/VnMd0bQZyvI/AAAAAAAAEJk/wvhB75mxQEE/s1600/ma1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S0VpwbjM2rA/VnMd0bQZyvI/AAAAAAAAEJk/wvhB75mxQEE/s400/ma1.jpg" width="385" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />I really enjoyed making these quilts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did not make these the "normal" way. I wanted to keep the original width and original points of the ties. I just cut off the excess and stitched them down to a background fabric. First I arranged them all on the background, and then pinned them all down, cutting away any excess. <br /> I do NOT recommend this method, but if for some crazy reason you try it yourself, I recommend that you use glue. On the 2nd quilt, I realized that pins shifted way too much, so I just used a little glue stick on each of the ties in between the pins, and it made it 1000x better! <br /><br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hlhm7hEnkE4/VnMgsbWQ4_I/AAAAAAAAEKA/9PFU8RUAN0o/s1600/a6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hlhm7hEnkE4/VnMgsbWQ4_I/AAAAAAAAEKA/9PFU8RUAN0o/s200/a6.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qti8DrrEQcQ/VnMgscXGyiI/AAAAAAAAEJ8/UaWEL2goyg4/s1600/a7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qti8DrrEQcQ/VnMgscXGyiI/AAAAAAAAEJ8/UaWEL2goyg4/s200/a7.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />So here you can see my ties pinned to the background, and then after they were all stitched down, I cut away the excess fabric. Kinda cool looking though, right? <br />In the end, it all worked out beautifully though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tu6XBsfTQt8/VnMdxeciC0I/AAAAAAAAEIQ/b4IBSFnzMD0/s1600/a1t.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tu6XBsfTQt8/VnMdxeciC0I/AAAAAAAAEIQ/b4IBSFnzMD0/s320/a1t.jpg" width="288" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Below you can see the 3 stages of my corner fans. I started by sketching the fan shape onto freezer paper. I ironed the freezer paper to the quilt, and then quilted the outline. I removed the paper, and for the center lines, I just took the dull side of a butter knife and gently pressed against my ruler so that I had my quilt guidelines. I don't know how this quilt will be laundered so I didn't want to use any type of marking utensil, even chalk! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The back of the quilt is a print of blue birds. John's grandfather loved birds, and also the color blue. <br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the first quilt, it's a few inches smaller and the stippling in the background was much more dense. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ2dILqkrk4/VnMdzAD9WuI/AAAAAAAAEI4/F0XfMrih3HU/s1600/la9t.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NQ2dILqkrk4/VnMdzAD9WuI/AAAAAAAAEI4/F0XfMrih3HU/s320/la9t.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
This is the second quilt I made, it's a few inches bigger, and I had to make the circle bigger in the center to accomodate the ties. And since the whole quilt was bigger, I also made the corner fans a bit larger too. I also thought the stippling done inthe first quilt was a hair TOO dense, so I made this one a little more open - I think it more appropriately matches the quilting in the ties and the fans. <br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6x8GZVnR0qk/VjvpDLCUn8I/AAAAAAAAEGU/LyYUJfHq6ko/s1600/d1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6x8GZVnR0qk/VjvpDLCUn8I/AAAAAAAAEGU/LyYUJfHq6ko/s320/d1.bmp" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Cabell's decided to have their guests sign fabric instead of a guest book. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am honored that they chose me to make their wedding quilt! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwFjAYP-W6g/VjvpCyZm1AI/AAAAAAAAEGQ/dk7mgUidrYc/s1600/d2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwFjAYP-W6g/VjvpCyZm1AI/AAAAAAAAEGQ/dk7mgUidrYc/s320/d2.bmp" width="286" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pLquZaou7LY/Vjvo_OScRkI/AAAAAAAAEF4/82JNd97QLIA/s1600/c5.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pLquZaou7LY/Vjvo_OScRkI/AAAAAAAAEF4/82JNd97QLIA/s320/c5.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For the quilting in the white open areas, I chose a version of paisleys but with hearts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IxR28qGhaik/VjvpCvw0tDI/AAAAAAAAEGM/QlPddnTjW2k/s1600/c7.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IxR28qGhaik/VjvpCvw0tDI/AAAAAAAAEGM/QlPddnTjW2k/s320/c7.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the quilt after all the quilting is finished, before binding</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1pmBtZluyPU/VjvpEUFovbI/AAAAAAAAEGk/7MoHFJEG4C8/s1600/d3.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1pmBtZluyPU/VjvpEUFovbI/AAAAAAAAEGk/7MoHFJEG4C8/s320/d3.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
And what an absolutely PERFECT day (and time) for photographing this quilt! Right before sunset!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3V7uoCW8WCQ/VjvpE_ALltI/AAAAAAAAEGo/1GyO7gLSsA4/s1600/d4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3V7uoCW8WCQ/VjvpE_ALltI/AAAAAAAAEGo/1GyO7gLSsA4/s320/d4.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
I added some FF Triangles to the back of the quilt for hanging. I feel like the triangles don't add the bulk like a sleeve does. But the triangles are only strong enough if the quilt doesn't weigh too much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rs3YbZRhp_Q/VjvpGuJhFzI/AAAAAAAAEG8/KhdlBW3ORqA/s1600/d5.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rs3YbZRhp_Q/VjvpGuJhFzI/AAAAAAAAEG8/KhdlBW3ORqA/s320/d5.bmp" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Aren't the shadows spectacular?! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zwhWxy4qIs0/VjvpGuHRTuI/AAAAAAAAEG4/MhKPtnqwRUA/s1600/d6.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zwhWxy4qIs0/VjvpGuHRTuI/AAAAAAAAEG4/MhKPtnqwRUA/s320/d6.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I really enjoyed making Mira's costume this year. <br />However, it was not without it's trials and headaches. <br />But we won two costume contests, and I live for praise and validation so I'm happy. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the inspiration photo I found online. <br />I tried so hard to get Mira to wear a wig. Unfortunately she was having NONE of it. I tried many many MANYYY different ways to get her to have "red hair" without the itchy wig. <br />I settled on this weird headband deal. <br />I took a wig from the halloween store and ripped out some of the stitches from the base.<br />This is actually made up of two "sections" of hair. (There are probably about 15 sections in a wig.)<br />I cut the sections in half to make 4 "curls" - then I just used a bunch of hairspray and attached them to the headband with needle and thread. (on the 2nd day of wear, I decided to pull out the hot glue gun FYI) So I know it looks weird. . but hey, at least she is wearing it and it's comfortable! ;c) </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_3b-QxO1Bwg/VjLtfFvG9YI/AAAAAAAAEEc/hH6C2P5wQV0/s1600/h4s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_3b-QxO1Bwg/VjLtfFvG9YI/AAAAAAAAEEc/hH6C2P5wQV0/s320/h4s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here we are at the Mall trick-or-treat. Out of 1,000's of kids. She won the costume contest for her age group (0-3) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7Ay2KfESUDo/VjLtfRsu8MI/AAAAAAAAEEY/yUFDIHOmkP8/s1600/h5s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7Ay2KfESUDo/VjLtfRsu8MI/AAAAAAAAEEY/yUFDIHOmkP8/s320/h5s.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And then we went trick-or-treating in our local town. <br /> Everywhere we went, there were smiles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nZwIUWdWPh4/VjLtjsk5AGI/AAAAAAAAEE0/uZasb97AnP8/s1600/h6s.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nZwIUWdWPh4/VjLtjsk5AGI/AAAAAAAAEE0/uZasb97AnP8/s400/h6s.bmp" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love these photos, she must have just got a sucker (that's her favorite!) But it was freezing and windy tonight so she had to wear a sweater cardigan. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vc_QuI42g0/VjLtYiT-37I/AAAAAAAAEDI/2lTnogewNTg/s1600/IMG_2022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9vc_QuI42g0/VjLtYiT-37I/AAAAAAAAEDI/2lTnogewNTg/s320/IMG_2022.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the pattern I used for this dress - simplicity pattern 3836 - All relatively easy - with the exception of the Lapel Collar. . which was like the most complex word math problem in the history of the whole entire world. I spent a good 24 hours just looking up tutorials and watching videos on this just to figure it out!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But that's why I like to do this each year. So that I can have a new skill in my pocket. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HQfu3uVFsEI/VjLtYaKiJPI/AAAAAAAAEDE/BjHZB6TPVh0/s1600/IMG_2209.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HQfu3uVFsEI/VjLtYaKiJPI/AAAAAAAAEDE/BjHZB6TPVh0/s320/IMG_2209.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here is ME having way too much fun with the wig that I bought for Mira. ;c) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LXgpYb1M2RU/VjLtfNBr2aI/AAAAAAAAEEU/6GbVKKamiH8/s1600/IMG_2229.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LXgpYb1M2RU/VjLtfNBr2aI/AAAAAAAAEEU/6GbVKKamiH8/s320/IMG_2229.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the two 1st place awards we received. YAY! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m6iSxBgtpIU/VjLzLD_Mj2I/AAAAAAAAEFc/74Z4tmNgq9k/s1600/e1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="184" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m6iSxBgtpIU/VjLzLD_Mj2I/AAAAAAAAEFc/74Z4tmNgq9k/s320/e1.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
and I thought I would share this adorable photo. We went trick-or-treating before Daddy got home. But he finally got home from work, and started down the street to meet us. When Mira saw her Dad she rannnnn to him saying "Dadda" "Dadda" and then just wanted to sit down right in the middle of the street with him. (they have a weird relationship, and I think they bond over candy and sugar) LOL</div>

<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This quilt was inspired by this mini quilt - I'm not sure who the original artist was but a google search brought me to <a href="http://www.pinknewbornservices.com/fun-tip-thursday/">THIS WEBSITE. </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fw_iwLuLnQ/VZwPA3RUPrI/AAAAAAAAD9o/l9R8yRZxjqs/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Fw_iwLuLnQ/VZwPA3RUPrI/AAAAAAAAD9o/l9R8yRZxjqs/s200/a1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Melissa wanted these two sleepers to be the "focus" of the quilt. But since the logos are right next to the zippers, we decided that the best thing to do would be to make each onesie into a "half" heart, and then put them together side-by-side to make up a whole heart. I took out 3 rows of stitches to try to get more room for the heart shape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XSd-fVXkn2w/VZwPAzFy6EI/AAAAAAAAD-A/nYISi6iqppw/s1600/a4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XSd-fVXkn2w/VZwPAzFy6EI/AAAAAAAAD-A/nYISi6iqppw/s320/a4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">It still didn't look quite right. . I think because it was the biggest heart and right in the middle. So then we decided to make them into two separate hearts. <br /><br />After some wiggling around, we came up with THIS design - I also added some more color, reduced the size of most of the hearts, and used the booties from the sleepers to add depth and more color. - much better! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fwJNiDwvGmU/VZwPBY8BlZI/AAAAAAAAD9w/ZSLiynNmhmY/s1600/a8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="309" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fwJNiDwvGmU/VZwPBY8BlZI/AAAAAAAAD9w/ZSLiynNmhmY/s320/a8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />The top was complete, but I felt it really needed "something". . . so I decided to try to do a Mock Trapunto technique. I used a thick polyester batting, and densely quilted in the background area and in and around all the hearts and applique shapes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3YiqfyT_b5M/VZwPLwePnBI/AAAAAAAAD-4/sMWXO-G6VqI/s1600/d7.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3YiqfyT_b5M/VZwPLwePnBI/AAAAAAAAD-4/sMWXO-G6VqI/s320/d7.bmp" width="320" /></a><br /><br />I used stippling in the large open areas and pebbling inside the smaller areas inside the heart and around the text. <br />Starting from the outside edges first and going around the edges. I stippled first, and then once I got to the inside of the hearts, I started pebbling. This pushes all the batting down, and into the open areas. Then I outlined around each heart, and they magically POOF UP, making it look like you took a long time stuffing each heart or adding extra batting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vqkHsQr-dLA/VZwPJLIsF2I/AAAAAAAAD-k/GlqT8nEL1cI/s1600/d5.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vqkHsQr-dLA/VZwPJLIsF2I/AAAAAAAAD-k/GlqT8nEL1cI/s320/d5.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3sKQE0-hTLQ/VZwPFzl9YeI/AAAAAAAAD-Y/KSEU2468zZo/s1600/d3.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3sKQE0-hTLQ/VZwPFzl9YeI/AAAAAAAAD-Y/KSEU2468zZo/s320/d3.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I didn't have quite enough of the fabric and they were sold out, so I pieced the backing and made it into a double-sided quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E8LdkNlhtgo/VZwPIulQhRI/AAAAAAAAD-g/jgekjiuDMOI/s1600/d4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E8LdkNlhtgo/VZwPIulQhRI/AAAAAAAAD-g/jgekjiuDMOI/s320/d4.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you can see how poofy the applique shapes are - and also the quilting on the back. <br />

<br /></div>
This Quilt was inspired by a photo online of hexagons made from triangles but the fabrics were solids. My friend Ang wanted to use FUN bright prints for the triangles for her quilt. Also we personalized the quilt with the recipients NAME and graduation date ;c) <br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9L9rluF8vI/VX5R5ae_j5I/AAAAAAAAD6o/U9ttxeTd_jU/s1600/la4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9L9rluF8vI/VX5R5ae_j5I/AAAAAAAAD6o/U9ttxeTd_jU/s320/la4.jpg" width="302" /></a><br />
A couple in-progress photos - closeup of the fabrics that make up the hexagons, and the quilting as it was just in the beginning stages. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8fBgQ31MunY/VX5Rv4GsqAI/AAAAAAAAD5E/dMgwWDep_E0/s1600/IMG_4303.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8fBgQ31MunY/VX5Rv4GsqAI/AAAAAAAAD5E/dMgwWDep_E0/s320/IMG_4303.JPG" width="239" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jsI4KgTqKt0/VX5Rv_ojVYI/AAAAAAAAD5I/1Ok_kzXsAAU/s1600/IMG_4301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jsI4KgTqKt0/VX5Rv_ojVYI/AAAAAAAAD5I/1Ok_kzXsAAU/s320/IMG_4301.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Ang chose to use the PINK fabric for the text , and since it didn't show up as much as I expected, I outlined with a darker thread color = purple. Now it really pops!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did the quilting with my regular piecing foot on my Juki DDL 8700 - We decided to do a simple straight-line quilting design in parallel lines all-over. This design is still quite time-consuming. . but simple none the less. </div>

For several years now, I've been making these quilts for a NY private school </div>
I cut up white fabric squares and mail them to the school. <br />
The students then fill them out with signatures and drawings. <br />
All the kids are so creative and I love seeing what they come up with ! <br />
The photos below are closeups of all of the squares. <br />

I've been a busy girl lately!!! </div>
Not just with QUILTS, but with lots of other goody goodies too!. . <br />
The following photos are projects I have finished that are not in the QUILT category ;c)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A memorial pillow made of a shirt, and an embroidered label. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Big shout-out to my AWESOME neighbor Sandy for doing the embroidery block for me! I don't have an embroidery machine . . yet ;c) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oq3D4qSKq8I/VP0K39U64TI/AAAAAAAADxA/-05BxA7aeH0/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oq3D4qSKq8I/VP0K39U64TI/AAAAAAAADxA/-05BxA7aeH0/s1600/a1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In a last-minute Mommy Panic, I realized I didn't have a SINGLE valentines day outfit for my daughter! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I took this outfit that was too big for her last summer, and altered it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made a patch with a big "M" for Mira, and FMQ'd or free-hand embroidered it with funky thread. </div>
I lightly basted the heart patch over the OLD logo so that I could remove it later if I wanted to. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I'm not sure if that will ever happen ;c) </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n6Wh6Ox-1sk/VP0K4CfiZ8I/AAAAAAAADxI/q3nh2BfjNl8/s1600/b1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n6Wh6Ox-1sk/VP0K4CfiZ8I/AAAAAAAADxI/q3nh2BfjNl8/s1600/b1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's my sweet girl modeling her outfit. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XlKkwDbzC0o/VP0K3qknukI/AAAAAAAADw8/kvUoQjrkdu4/s1600/b2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XlKkwDbzC0o/VP0K3qknukI/AAAAAAAADw8/kvUoQjrkdu4/s1600/b2.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Okay, ALSO. . I am TOTALLY OBSESSED with this : </div>
It's a Free dress pattern from "<a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheCottageMama">The Cottage Mama</a>"<br />
It's free simply by joining her mailing list or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/600695049985572/">FACEBOOK</a> group! <br />
It's so versatile and very easy and user friendly! <br />
I have made SIX dresses total in the very short time since I have found this pattern ;c)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Below is the very first dress I made using this pattern. I just pulled scraps from my stash for "practice." Look how ADORABLE??? I of course, was hooked! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFrHRZ0jhVI/VP0K5ANMTQI/AAAAAAAADxU/09xxDoZ3Fe4/s1600/d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFrHRZ0jhVI/VP0K5ANMTQI/AAAAAAAADxU/09xxDoZ3Fe4/s1600/d1.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here is the "practice" dress featuring my model ;c) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YYb8bPqiPrQ/VP0K5TrCM9I/AAAAAAAADyg/EONrVBGe0D4/s1600/d2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YYb8bPqiPrQ/VP0K5TrCM9I/AAAAAAAADyg/EONrVBGe0D4/s1600/d2.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After so much success with the practice piece, I decided to make another one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went to Joanns to find fabric with the intention of trying to recreate<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/84653667972478477/"> THIS</a> dress.</div>
They had a new line of fabrics called "in the navy". . . <br />
Doesn't she look so beautiful in that pale blue fabric?? It matches her eyes perfectly! <br />
And do you see her looking at herself in the mirror?? Boyyyy she thinks she looks CUTE! hahaha<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4ErQz2Q0eOg/VP0K4hEbJzI/AAAAAAAADxQ/MAZ0nVG730A/s1600/c1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4ErQz2Q0eOg/VP0K4hEbJzI/AAAAAAAADxQ/MAZ0nVG730A/s1600/c1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You would think after 2 dresses in a row I would have had enough. . . but nOOOOOOOOO LOl </div>
My friend just had a new baby girl, and she also has a 2 year old! <br />
Usually I make new babies a quilt, but how cute would matching dresses be?? <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Front? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YplU5ZWZL0E/VP0K5lXSp3I/AAAAAAAADxY/3BlBmCzn71o/s1600/e1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YplU5ZWZL0E/VP0K5lXSp3I/AAAAAAAADxY/3BlBmCzn71o/s1600/e1.jpg" height="268" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Back? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zHvyufpk82M/VP0K6CreDpI/AAAAAAAADxc/JOX-EDtTbRY/s1600/e2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zHvyufpk82M/VP0K6CreDpI/AAAAAAAADxc/JOX-EDtTbRY/s1600/e2.jpg" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And since these were in different sizes, quite a bit larger and quite a bit smaller, I decided to once again make a "practice" run. So I found these fabrics in my stash - This pink floral with black accents. This was my practice run and the above fabrics I picked out specifically for the dresses. I like them both, but couldnt' decide which one to give the new momma. So I let her choose. Guess which one she chose?? hahaha. I guess I need to do MORE "practice" stuff hahah<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--cReo3xndJw/VP0K6ecTYGI/AAAAAAAADxk/-UlILuoDTJk/s1600/e3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--cReo3xndJw/VP0K6ecTYGI/AAAAAAAADxk/-UlILuoDTJk/s1600/e3.jpg" height="272" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WXDHHzd3m64/VP0K6wspXOI/AAAAAAAADxo/yXCDM1rxuac/s1600/e4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WXDHHzd3m64/VP0K6wspXOI/AAAAAAAADxo/yXCDM1rxuac/s1600/e4.jpg" height="274" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VjZHpssw0CY/VO45eRitZhI/AAAAAAAADvM/t9Be6nVW6MY/s1600/z1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VjZHpssw0CY/VO45eRitZhI/AAAAAAAADvM/t9Be6nVW6MY/s1600/z1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">My sister requested that I make an irish-themed baby quilt for her dear friends who are Irish and expecting their first child soon. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
She decided that we should use the Irish Flag AND shamrocks in the final quilt. But I didn't like the Irish flag , and couldn't find a good place to put it, so instead I used the colors from the Irish Flag and cut out shamrocks and put them around the inside borders of the quilt. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IMaOE7lLFCA/VO45dQxoS8I/AAAAAAAADv0/C2HrvwnW0P8/s1600/d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IMaOE7lLFCA/VO45dQxoS8I/AAAAAAAADv0/C2HrvwnW0P8/s1600/d1.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
The best thing about this quilt was the fun text around the borders. We used the first 4 lines from "The Old Irish Blessing" I have made a tutorial on how to quilt text on dark fabric to use in your quilt and it can be found <a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2015/02/how-to-quilt-text-on-fabrics.html">ON THIS BLOG POST</a>. A video tutorial is included. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QGR7reJJyww/VO45ddDwYEI/AAAAAAAADvA/jbxivTf5bFI/s1600/l5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QGR7reJJyww/VO45ddDwYEI/AAAAAAAADvA/jbxivTf5bFI/s1600/l5.jpg" height="218" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the back of the quilt, I used strips of fabric from the front, and a leprauchan-doggie fabric ;c) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iNXBiOKlMjo/VO45de_XnUI/AAAAAAAADu8/cF_rWpecTeQ/s1600/b5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iNXBiOKlMjo/VO45de_XnUI/AAAAAAAADu8/cF_rWpecTeQ/s1600/b5.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also made this cute label with fabric markers! </div>
<br />
Here is the finished project! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-spG8Yg_BWJc/VO45e2M7FKI/AAAAAAAADvY/4y9JRbPGdfY/s1600/z2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-spG8Yg_BWJc/VO45e2M7FKI/AAAAAAAADvY/4y9JRbPGdfY/s1600/z2.jpg" height="308" width="320" /></a></div>
I did an echo stitch around the text, and did a funky fun shamrock echo in each of the 4 corners.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O2otUXryfaI/VO45fLhCVnI/AAAAAAAADvc/JYlpkMi51MY/s1600/z3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O2otUXryfaI/VO45fLhCVnI/AAAAAAAADvc/JYlpkMi51MY/s1600/z3.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
For the center I did a thick zigzag stitch outline around the appliqued name "Keelan"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0gWIxPJiTfM/VO45fuCeP7I/AAAAAAAADvg/QJ1q0WMAavk/s1600/z4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0gWIxPJiTfM/VO45fuCeP7I/AAAAAAAADvg/QJ1q0WMAavk/s1600/z4.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh, and sometimes when I am stuck on a project, I will ask my MOTHER if she has any suggestions. And the things she comes up with are SO random and "out there" it's comical! For this project, she suggested that I put "white fluffy sheep" on the quilt. Which is not such a crazy idea. . but we had shamrocks and flags. .. the sheep were just from her head! <br />So, to be funny, I decided to make a little stuffed sheep and I shipped it to my sister with the quilt to surprise her! ;c) <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GS314dQRpHo/VO4xTBMKHDI/AAAAAAAADuQ/D6aA1oTttEk/s1600/z3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GS314dQRpHo/VO4xTBMKHDI/AAAAAAAADuQ/D6aA1oTttEk/s1600/z3.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have made many quilts for people that wanted different texts somewhere on the quilt. Sometimes a family has special "sayings" or nicknames they want included somewhere on their memory quilt. There are several ways to go about doing this, but I will describe the way I have found works best for me. <br />
<br />
What you will need for this project: <br />
<br />
* A general knowledge of sewing, quilting, and free-motion<br />
* A laptop or computer with access to the internet<br />
* A good working sewing machine with a straight and zigzag stitch option<br />
* A sandwiched and basted quilt<br />
* Scissors, Tweezers, Seam Ripper, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GXFH1K/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003GXFH1K&linkCode=as2&tag=katsquiandcra-20&linkId=NTKL4D2QZYZSBA4B">Cheater Needle</a>,<br />
* Good-quality threads - (details later) <br />
* Darning Foot<br />
* Tracing Paper, (or you can use a large phone book) <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zkOTAr-TjXY/VO4td_LlkvI/AAAAAAAADt8/If1PLh1ihbI/s1600/s3.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zkOTAr-TjXY/VO4td_LlkvI/AAAAAAAADt8/If1PLh1ihbI/s1600/s3.png" height="158" width="320" /></a>Start by finding a font you would like to use for your quilt. Go to <a href="http://www.dafont.com/">DAFONT.COM </a>and type in the text you want to use in the "preview" box. This allows you to preview the ACTUAL text the way it will look in your finished quilt. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For less starts and stops, choose a font that is cursive - Please see <a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2015/01/fonts-for-quilting-text.html">THIS BLOG POST</a> for more details on how to choose a font for quilting text. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1swtimIMtlg/VO40BjQoaFI/AAAAAAAADus/y-v4xL9HO_w/s1600/s4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1swtimIMtlg/VO40BjQoaFI/AAAAAAAADus/y-v4xL9HO_w/s1600/s4.jpg" height="320" style="cursor: move;" width="239" /></a>Once you have chosen your font, you can either download it to your computer, and then pull it up in a word processor program or a program like MS Paint. I prefer PAINT because you can easily resize it little-by-little until it fits perfectly into your quilt. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HLvGw4WS3iw/VO4xarlnHcI/AAAAAAAADuY/lWPu9Psy0kM/s1600/e1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HLvGw4WS3iw/VO4xarlnHcI/AAAAAAAADuY/lWPu9Psy0kM/s1600/e1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a><br />
Lay your phonebook or tracing paper directly over your computer screen and trace the text with a dark inkpen. Line up the bottom edge of the paper with the bottom edge of your computer screen to keep your text straight. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yf_ik-lwZq8/VO4xa6L2l4I/AAAAAAAADuc/o8veb73dQjg/s1600/e4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yf_ik-lwZq8/VO4xa6L2l4I/AAAAAAAADuc/o8veb73dQjg/s1600/e4.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a><i><b>(if you are using white or LIGHT fabrics, you can lay your fabric directly on the computer screen before piecing it into your quilt, and use a thin pencil or erasable ink to mark your fabric)</b></i><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next you will take your marked paper and pin it directly on your sandwiched quilt with quilting pins or safety pins.<br />
<br />
Now you are ready to quilt! <br />
Quilt directly over the marked text just as you would if you were quilting and following a marked line. So you don't have ugly knots, leave a thread tail when you start and stop a line of stitching, and you will go and bury those threads later. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Once you are done with a section of text, remove the quilt completely from the machine. Carefully remove the paper and then bury your threads. It helps if you have a Cheater Needle for this task. <br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is the video I made explaining this method: </span><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3r3clc4eP6U" width="420"></iframe><br />
<br />
If you want your text to show up with just a single line of stitches, I recommedn using a thick thread such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZEQN6W/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004ZEQN6W&linkCode=as2&tag=katsquiandcra-20&linkId=QEYFKZSAZ56EKS3P">Spaghetti by Wonderfil </a>which is a 12wt but is able to go through your machine. Use a 40 or 50wt thread in a matching color in the bobbin. ( I recommend <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041CJ3O2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0041CJ3O2&linkCode=as2&tag=katsquiandcra-20&linkId=45SJD5PTM7VVQJXU">Gutterman Sew-All Polyester</a>)<br />
<br />
If you don't have 12wt thread, you will need to go over the text several times for it really show up in the finished quilt. <br />
<br />
Another option would be to use a satin stitch, which also gives the text a calligraphy-like effect. <br />
See again <a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2015/01/fonts-for-quilting-text.html">THIS BLOG POST</a> for examples of each of these options<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ruIUgyJclfI/VO4xJ0yoaQI/AAAAAAAADuI/NEIWRs9UcF0/s1600/d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ruIUgyJclfI/VO4xJ0yoaQI/AAAAAAAADuI/NEIWRs9UcF0/s1600/d1.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And ya know, you COULD print the text out. But I am cheap, errr I mean FRUGAL.. and cannot stand using expensive printer ink and paper. so I recommend just copying it directly onto your tracing paper or fabric from the computer screen. The computer monitor makes an EXCELLENT lightbox!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

In the quiltville swap yahoo group we swap strips and sometimes, pieced blocks. For this particular swap, it was around the time Bonnie was giving instructions for her "Orca Bay" mystery quilt. So we decided to swap a set amount of string blocks, and also 4" strips! I have SO MAnY leftover even after making this whole quilt!!! <br />
I just love it. I'm going to hopefully be able to hang this at my Mom's house, because she has red and black accents in her house. And also I stole all of my quilts back when i moved into my own house ;c) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LZ6l0Gr8nPU/VOz7SfuwQ7I/AAAAAAAADsU/66GXVs363Fg/s1600/b2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LZ6l0Gr8nPU/VOz7SfuwQ7I/AAAAAAAADsU/66GXVs363Fg/s1600/b2.jpg" height="306" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is what I started with. I had the finished red scrappy string blocks that were 5.5" unfinished. And I used the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YZ8S4Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000YZ8S4Q&linkCode=as2&tag=katsquiandcra-20&linkId=V3LGDOA55EXNACJS%22%3EFons%20and%20Porter%20Super%20Flying%20Geese%20Triangle%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=katsquiandcra-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000YZ8S4Q">Fons and Porter Flying Geese ruler</a> to cut triangles from the remaining red strips and white fabric to use as the sashing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P2V3EtyUgiM/VOz8oZiOW_I/AAAAAAAADts/SymRc0dnQ_o/s1600/b3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P2V3EtyUgiM/VOz8oZiOW_I/AAAAAAAADts/SymRc0dnQ_o/s1600/b3.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I only had 2" and 1.5" red strips remaining, and I didn't want to cut into my red yardage, so I decided to cut the 1.5" strips into squares and make 4-patches for the cornerstones. I used the 4 patches and white in alternating cornerstones. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZF3EknUs2FY/VOz7w7fDjKI/AAAAAAAADtk/BbXoe8mrv94/s1600/b1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZF3EknUs2FY/VOz7w7fDjKI/AAAAAAAADtk/BbXoe8mrv94/s1600/b1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After I finished the quilt top, I felt like it neededddddd. . . SOMETHING. . .<br />So went round and round with it and decided to add a wide red border and do scalloped edges. I really wanted to soften up the sharp edges and I think the curvs does the trick perfectly! <br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq3y6eQ2vFM/VOz7wNev5wI/AAAAAAAADtU/Es9jndg7XMs/s1600/a9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq3y6eQ2vFM/VOz7wNev5wI/AAAAAAAADtU/Es9jndg7XMs/s1600/a9.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I stitched together the 2" strips in 5.5" sections, and as luck would have it. . . I had exactly FOUR string blocks remaining. . so I used those 4 blocks in the 4 corners of my borders! (love when things work out so perfectly like that!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R8SY9pV-zaY/VOz7v26hblI/AAAAAAAADtQ/aOFXkVBc58w/s1600/a8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R8SY9pV-zaY/VOz7v26hblI/AAAAAAAADtQ/aOFXkVBc58w/s1600/a8.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I couldn't decide whether to use black or white binding. . . so I went to facebook for suggestions ;c) <br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tZKlEZsS2NY/VOz7vbqKqcI/AAAAAAAADtM/9D0oCi4vDy0/s1600/a7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tZKlEZsS2NY/VOz7vbqKqcI/AAAAAAAADtM/9D0oCi4vDy0/s1600/a7.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here we are before binding and after. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mIBiyhn3LQA/VOz7uoqU0YI/AAAAAAAADsw/PYa5AS5hHfw/s1600/a5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mIBiyhn3LQA/VOz7uoqU0YI/AAAAAAAADsw/PYa5AS5hHfw/s1600/a5.jpg" height="302" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the back I used the remaining 5.5" strips of 2" sections sewn together, and put them in between two 4" white bands. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ejN1A1vsmRo/VOz7tBeksDI/AAAAAAAADsc/yR9c-Q7aFzo/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ejN1A1vsmRo/VOz7tBeksDI/AAAAAAAADsc/yR9c-Q7aFzo/s1600/a1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The red that I used for this quilt's backing, is what was leftover from a T-shirt quilt. So I didn't have quite enough for the whole back of the quilt. But that's okay because this forced me to make a cute pieced backing! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P0NsfErYMEE/VOz7tAFyjBI/AAAAAAAADsg/cA3MKxVxo30/s1600/a2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P0NsfErYMEE/VOz7tAFyjBI/AAAAAAAADsg/cA3MKxVxo30/s1600/a2.jpg" height="184" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I just used a plate from the kitchen to do the scallops, and I attached the binding totally by machine. </div>

When we write text on our quilt and use it on our quilt top or in place of quilting it is called free-hand machine embroidery.<br />
Depending on the font, I will use a zig-zag stitch for a calligraphy effect, OR, I will use a thick thread (12wt) and just a straight stitch. Both options are done free-motion with a darning foot. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X-UfnDdFt24/VLw8ZWk7xGI/AAAAAAAADqE/01cRflnt47k/s1600/fonts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X-UfnDdFt24/VLw8ZWk7xGI/AAAAAAAADqE/01cRflnt47k/s1600/fonts.jpg" height="204" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"> (click photo to zoom-in/closeup) </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So what does one look for when choosing a font for text quilting? What aspects of a font make for an ideal free-hand machine embroidery? </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>1. The lines that make up the font are a similar width. </b> </li>
</ul>
<br />
It's difficult for us to recreate with thread the various widths made with a calligraphy pen or marker We can use a wide zigzag stitch and by pretending your quilt is the paper, and your needle is the "PEN," we can give somewhat of a calligraphy effect, but it will NOT be the same as what is on the font. If you do the zigzag stitch then that is just your creative vision. So it's still best to just choose a font that uses the same width throughout the font. <br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>2. There are not many stops and starts, </b></li>
</ul>
<br />
It's unlikely you'll find a font in which the letters are all attached. For machine quilting, we want as FEW stops and starts, (or KNOTS) as possible. Just keep this in mind when choosing a font. <br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>3. Simple is best. </b></li>
</ul>
<br />
Some of the most beautiful fonts include lots of curly-Q's and beautiful decorative swirls and whirls. But that's not really going to look best when transferred to thread on your quilt. Plus it's a pain in the butt! So we should look for a font that is SIMPLY beautiful. <br />
<br />
<br />
Here are some examples of text in my past quilts: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goBfSmz4dlo/VLxRQrtdQNI/AAAAAAAADqY/J1Adsoa6Y6M/s1600/font3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goBfSmz4dlo/VLxRQrtdQNI/AAAAAAAADqY/J1Adsoa6Y6M/s1600/font3.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4 memorial quilts I made using this gentleman's clothing, Ford fabric, and photos. Each quilt contained "sayings" and nicknames in the borders. Each of the sayings were unique to the quilt's recipients (the 4 siblings.) The borders were done with a 12 wt thread and straight stitch. The center/middle section that contained the name was done with a zigzag stitch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's a link to the thread I used on amazon: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
for this advent calendar I used a 12wt thread by wonderfil called "spaghetti"</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since the name on this child's clothing quilt was somewhat large, I decided to use a font that looked more juvenile. I would typically stick to cursive but I like the way this turned out. It was worth the extra knots. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TY1heeCr6ZY/VLxRR7qFb2I/AAAAAAAADrA/ysI0mbLO0ww/s1600/font9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TY1heeCr6ZY/VLxRR7qFb2I/AAAAAAAADrA/ysI0mbLO0ww/s1600/font9.jpg" height="179" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For Isabella's clothing quilt, I wanted something that looked more modern and elegant. Again worth the extra knots ;c) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I include free personalization with all of my T-shirt quilts. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I DO want to do a tutorial on how to actually do the text on the quilt. Stay tuned for that sometime in the near future!! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gaD2Y9J75G0/VKseVoJ1p_I/AAAAAAAADpE/IZ7pcosDJgw/s1600/f9.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gaD2Y9J75G0/VKseVoJ1p_I/AAAAAAAADpE/IZ7pcosDJgw/s1600/f9.bmp" height="218" width="640" /></a></div>
It was fun getting to design an applique quilt from scratch. Of course I couldn't make it just a normal sashed applique quilt! I made the blocks "framed" and TILTED. (gluten for punishment I guess) But doesn't it look great?? Such fun bold colors, and just perfect. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gdpa9SSh_pY/VKsd3kd_qgI/AAAAAAAADn8/LgJ0KsSp3AQ/s1600/IMG_4450.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gdpa9SSh_pY/VKsd3kd_qgI/AAAAAAAADn8/LgJ0KsSp3AQ/s1600/IMG_4450.JPG" height="320" width="268" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here are some closeups of the quilting. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kPT7izyID9Y/VKseHCA2b4I/AAAAAAAADoc/gNvbTbcxCHM/s1600/f6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kPT7izyID9Y/VKseHCA2b4I/AAAAAAAADoc/gNvbTbcxCHM/s1600/f6.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
For the white areas I did my version of McTavishing. . . ORRR.. S's and Comets (because I think thats what they look like, and S stand for SHAUNA!) Shauna is a big fan of chocolate chip cookies, and although a challenge, I found a way to include that next to her name ;c)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i2YEyl8Eup0/VKseJRQIwBI/AAAAAAAADok/md8kvqy1-I0/s1600/f7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i2YEyl8Eup0/VKseJRQIwBI/AAAAAAAADok/md8kvqy1-I0/s1600/f7.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
I quilted straight lines in the background areas of the blocks, and I left the "frames" empty, because they poofed up and looked cute that way. For the center black frame, I did a large half feather. For the colored inner frame, I did a checkerboard. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_MS9czsJ8DQ/VKseLsFif-I/AAAAAAAADo0/7CmK8dPRARU/s1600/f8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_MS9czsJ8DQ/VKseLsFif-I/AAAAAAAADo0/7CmK8dPRARU/s1600/f8.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The appliques incluce a female silhouette, high heel, flowy dress, pearl necklace, lipstick, perfume, purse, diamond ring, iphone, martini glass, and sunglasses. </div>

<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rYFDenfSkM0/VKsbDuaLOBI/AAAAAAAADnw/kesut5o3z34/s1600/b4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rYFDenfSkM0/VKsbDuaLOBI/AAAAAAAADnw/kesut5o3z34/s1600/b4.bmp" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This might be my favorite baby clothes quilt yet! Just look at all of the details and fun stuff that is included. There are 3D elements such as butterflies with moveable wings. There are several bibs that seem to jump off the quilt, and even a santa hat. The Disney costumes/dresses/tutus were cut using the skirts left full. So that the skirt area could flow freely or be moved by your hand. <br />
I added a soft little bootie, kept all of the buttons and original areas that I possibly could, There's even a HAIRBOW. And to top it all off, I embroidered the name in the center with a pretty curly font!<br />

What we do is I send the cut squares to the school, and the students fill them out, based on a certain "theme" and then send them back to me to be made into a quilt. </div>

<br />
For Joyce, I made a T-quilt AND a quilted tote. The shirts used were those of her and her brothers and sisters and would be a Christmas gift for her mother. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mpnkqe-kapk/VKsWMIRYF_I/AAAAAAAADlg/YuuPwgP2ssM/s1600/z1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mpnkqe-kapk/VKsWMIRYF_I/AAAAAAAADlg/YuuPwgP2ssM/s1600/z1.jpg" height="320" width="310" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the completed quilt top </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Eho4BE8P9g/VKsWMjKDZhI/AAAAAAAADlw/0J4FmOpTef0/s1600/z2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Eho4BE8P9g/VKsWMjKDZhI/AAAAAAAADlw/0J4FmOpTef0/s1600/z2.jpg" height="320" width="245" /></a></div>
And the completed QUILT! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Closeup of the quilt - I framed the shirt that said "world's greatest mom" so it would stand out. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VumEzP8Q3xE/VKsWMl-uERI/AAAAAAAADls/pDK_371GCG0/s1600/z4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VumEzP8Q3xE/VKsWMl-uERI/AAAAAAAADls/pDK_371GCG0/s1600/z4.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_7a4-GyAh6M/VKsTTPsO5aI/AAAAAAAADlU/ticGI-wxL7Y/s1600/f4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_7a4-GyAh6M/VKsTTPsO5aI/AAAAAAAADlU/ticGI-wxL7Y/s1600/f4.bmp" height="242" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been making quilts for Beth and her family for awhile now. The quilt I made for her 1st son, <a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2012/08/bradys-baby-clothing-quilt-sammys-baby.html">HERE</a>, was the very first baby clothes quilt I had ever made. I enjoy these quilts with all the small pieces so much - I'm forever grateful to Beth for getting this started for me. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ymgDtewBLrM/VKsTRNG1QPI/AAAAAAAADlE/G7AK5Gc8MPk/s1600/a2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ymgDtewBLrM/VKsTRNG1QPI/AAAAAAAADlE/G7AK5Gc8MPk/s1600/a2.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the quilt for her 2nd son Joey. Both quilts are twin size. This is all of the articles of clothing laid out before graphing. <br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K_s5m0GKMf8/VKsTHaTOAfI/AAAAAAAADk0/x_v-VaUzQZc/s1600/f1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K_s5m0GKMf8/VKsTHaTOAfI/AAAAAAAADk0/x_v-VaUzQZc/s1600/f1.jpg" height="320" width="235" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the finished quilt! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wvbMY81kBtA/VKsTRb-OKVI/AAAAAAAADlI/5WgpHYjN-Mc/s1600/f2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wvbMY81kBtA/VKsTRb-OKVI/AAAAAAAADlI/5WgpHYjN-Mc/s1600/f2.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
I rushed to get a pic of this quilt outside, and it was right as the sun was setting. We only had a couple horus of sunshine in the whole month of December so I took what I could get! ;c)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I just love the way this one turned out! Bridget is a sweet local girl who let me make her a T-quilt out of her son's baby clothes. Look at all of the adorable faux tie onesies!!! She had such super cute little outfits and it made this quilt just perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I embroidered her son's name in a center block. I picked this font randomly but I think it turned out so good - I'll definitely be using this one again!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was SO happy and excited to get to make a quilt for my dear friend Ang! The theme of her shirts was all of the places she has worked. There were many small pieces and all of the items were so coloful, this really didn't take much work from me! This quilt MADE itself ;c) I love the puzzle look of how her quilt turned out. There are so many small pieces and little fun logos that give her quilt so much interest and fun! </div>

<br />
I love advent calendars! I've made several in many different varieties.<br />
This year, I stumbled upon a photo from <a href="http://bolamodesignstudio.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-advent-season-is-quickly-closing-in.html">THIS BLOG</a> and I fell in love. I had an uncontrollable desire to recreate the idea into a quilt! <br />
<br />
The artist used a wood medium, and as luck would have it, one version of the Bible Verse Luke:2.11 (The Christmas Story) has exactly 25 words. - perfect for an advent calendar! <br />
<br />
First I created little mini quilts. One one side I appliqued the numbers 1 through 25. On the opposite side I embroidered a word from the Bible verse. These are made like <a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2012/08/quilted-coasters-tutorial-with-aurifil.html">THESE COASTERS</a>- and are not bound. After flipping, I quilted the little mini quilts, and made a buttonhole with my machine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d6xcp4EB0RU/VKr99a7G6DI/AAAAAAAADhs/G_8meusw5j0/s1600/IMG_0319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d6xcp4EB0RU/VKr99a7G6DI/AAAAAAAADhs/G_8meusw5j0/s1600/IMG_0319.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Setting the 25 mini quilts aside, I created the background for the advent calendar. And quilted it thoroughly with a tight stipple. For the very top of the advent quilt, I cut out a silhouette nativity scene out of a gold fabric fused with heat N bond. I positioned the appliques and ironed them down. I continued doing a tight stipple over the whole quilt, saving the nativity scene for the last. <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the whole piece was quilted, I wanted to add a sleeve to the back of the quilt. FYI I detest making hanging sleeves and would rather do just about anything lol - But I really thought it was important for this particular quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried to pin down exactly what it was I hated about making hanging sleeves, and I came to the conclusion that it's the hand sewing. Not just hand sewing, but sewing through the thick layers and all of that bulk. What if there was a way to do it by machine? Surely someone has discovered a way already. . right? So I went to google to search. And guess what? Sure enough, there was a tutorial on making and attaching a hanging sleeve almost entirely by machine! I was skeptical at first, but I gave it a go. The method uses a blind hem stitch, but you can use a tight zigzag if you are careful. The stitches don't go through to the front of the quilt. It is just ctching the backing and a bit of the batting. It worked perfectly! My mind was blown and it seriously is a life changing discovery! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If anyone is interested in this method - <a href="http://weallsew.com/2014/08/26/easy-diy-quilt-hanging-sleeve-almost-entirely-by-machine/">here is the LINK</a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vkJtz7Vj5yg/VKr-DJbgLgI/AAAAAAAADiE/1dYgtkYv2sc/s1600/IMG_0330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vkJtz7Vj5yg/VKr-DJbgLgI/AAAAAAAADiE/1dYgtkYv2sc/s1600/IMG_0330.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So after the hanging sleeve was attached, I started working on the position of the mini quilts. Once I found a placement I liked, I made a mark with chalk through the buttonhole onto the quilt background. I removed the mini quilts and then started to sew my buttons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0wqsUhT4qVI/VKr-JaEOXHI/AAAAAAAADiU/FjEjSVrxLRc/s1600/IMG_0334.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0wqsUhT4qVI/VKr-JaEOXHI/AAAAAAAADiU/FjEjSVrxLRc/s1600/IMG_0334.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the buttons were sewn, I laid the mini quilts directly under the buttonhole. I chose a navy-colored thin ribbon, poked it through the buttonhole and tied a bow over the button. That way the mini quilts can be easily turned from front to back, but still secure. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c1l1pFTowiM/VGjoSMcIXHI/AAAAAAAADeA/bJpvn_2nywA/s1600/amelia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c1l1pFTowiM/VGjoSMcIXHI/AAAAAAAADeA/bJpvn_2nywA/s1600/amelia.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wanted to give sweet baby Amelia a "Katie Quilt" for her birthday. I used everything from my stash. I started with this large piece of minkee fleece that I had leftover from another project. It's super soft and BIG so I didnt' have to piece fabric together for the backing. I have used Minkee for backing before, but I always used batting ALSO, but this time I left out the batting. For a large, bed-size quilt I think batting is fine, but I wanted something that she could lug around herself, so it needed to be LIGHT too. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FHsyZ1rCBCA/VGjmtmhwonI/AAAAAAAADdk/-lUCQ6gFEkQ/s1600/a2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FHsyZ1rCBCA/VGjmtmhwonI/AAAAAAAADdk/-lUCQ6gFEkQ/s1600/a2.bmp" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Double Sided Minkee is thick enough that it doesn't require batting. Also, it gives a very nice effect when free-motion quilted. However there is a slight downside when you omit the batting. When there is no batting, there is nothing for the fleece to stick to. The batting acts as a stabilizer so that your fleece doesn't shift around. To remedy that problem I just used lots of safety pins in the basting process. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qKc9SeArBVM/VGjmkSujpAI/AAAAAAAADdc/5AHcMJU3-mc/s1600/a1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qKc9SeArBVM/VGjmkSujpAI/AAAAAAAADdc/5AHcMJU3-mc/s1600/a1.bmp" height="261" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For the quilt TOP I pieced together feminine prints of pink and grey. Honestly, I'm not real sure what I was going for here - just scrappy I guess!! Who knows, it was late when I came up with this design ;c) I think a quilt looks best when you incorporate elements from the back on the front, and vice versa. So for the front, I appliqued circles of minkee and also used the minkee as the binding. <br />
<br />
** I have a tutorial on how to do self-binding with fleece<a href="http://katiesquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/2011/11/mitered-self-binding-with-fleece.html"> HERE</a>**<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cyERvL0_PSY/VGjm7lN6FsI/AAAAAAAADd0/92W8Niz78_o/s1600/a3.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cyERvL0_PSY/VGjm7lN6FsI/AAAAAAAADd0/92W8Niz78_o/s1600/a3.bmp" height="190" width="320" /></a></div>
And for the backing I took one of the pink floral prints and used it to applique her name.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zePE_MS7ur4/VGjmzzp2jrI/AAAAAAAADds/wcmY3nShrWs/s1600/a4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zePE_MS7ur4/VGjmzzp2jrI/AAAAAAAADds/wcmY3nShrWs/s1600/a4.bmp" height="140" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this last picture you can get a good look at the quilting design I used. I always want to try these fun large-scale quilting motifs, but am always too scared. I love the look of all-over free-hand feathers, but every time I attempt them I regret it. I think maybe it's because I think every tiny bit of space needs to be quilted - and everything needs to be touching. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So for my last couple projects I have been trying to use more negative space. I think just as rainbow colors only look good with a good amount of WHITE. . . . "fancy" quilting only look good when there is some negative space? Maybe? I'm working on it anyway! </div>

Placemats make a great last-minute gift and they can be more fun than a regular quilt since they are smaller. Use scraps from your stash or that one piece of fabric you LOVE but don't know what to do with. <br />
<br />
Every time I saw this primitive patchwork design at Joanns I wanted to buy it. I was dreaming of the fun quilting I could do with the patchwork but didn't want to piece together all those 1" squares. I needed a gift for my secret sister at church, so I decided to make her these placemats. I get to work with the pretty fabrics, and she gets some placemats! Win-Win!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f4CGn6KgtV8/VGfL51a46dI/AAAAAAAADc8/Tf_y9A0RY1Q/s1600/c1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f4CGn6KgtV8/VGfL51a46dI/AAAAAAAADc8/Tf_y9A0RY1Q/s1600/c1.bmp" height="166" width="320" /></a></div>
2. Press your top and layer Top/Batting/Backing as you would a regular quilt. <br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MlSpsDfuS00/VGfLBCkTV4I/AAAAAAAADbU/SdAgPfiE7sc/s1600/a1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MlSpsDfuS00/VGfLBCkTV4I/AAAAAAAADbU/SdAgPfiE7sc/s1600/a1.bmp" height="256" width="320" /></a></div>
3. Trim the edges of the batting and backing EVEN with your quilt top. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ktplN0pikrI/VGfLAkO_geI/AAAAAAAADbM/Plm95LdJ1Jk/s1600/a2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ktplN0pikrI/VGfLAkO_geI/AAAAAAAADbM/Plm95LdJ1Jk/s1600/a2.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
4. Remove the backing and set it to the side. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a0Sgw9Oj9Fs/VGfK7Omu_EI/AAAAAAAADbE/EFPbPf0ETLg/s1600/a3.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a0Sgw9Oj9Fs/VGfK7Omu_EI/AAAAAAAADbE/EFPbPf0ETLg/s1600/a3.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
5. Pin the quilt top to JUST the batting with safety pins. Leave an inch or two around the outside edges free. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rycEMJbJ1Gk/VGfLGG_8shI/AAAAAAAADbs/wddFrWErRcA/s1600/a3b.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rycEMJbJ1Gk/VGfLGG_8shI/AAAAAAAADbs/wddFrWErRcA/s1600/a3b.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
6. Lay your backing piece of fabric on TOP of the quilt top - Right Sides Facing<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mjLabLyqtMY/VGfLFOqejUI/AAAAAAAADbc/48VVrJ2BFzU/s1600/a4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mjLabLyqtMY/VGfLFOqejUI/AAAAAAAADbc/48VVrJ2BFzU/s1600/a4.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
7. Pin all around the edges. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LZfr74J5Xas/VGfLFm_Q4eI/AAAAAAAADbk/7o0FGR3zh24/s1600/a5.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LZfr74J5Xas/VGfLFm_Q4eI/AAAAAAAADbk/7o0FGR3zh24/s1600/a5.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
8. Decide where you want your opening to be. It should be about the size of your fist. Mark the beginning and ending of your sewing line with double pins. This will let you know where to start and stop sewing. Choose a section that is not directly in the center of a long edge, but not a corner either. Sew a quarter inch seam allowance around the edge leaving the opening free. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your sewing line. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-l0GsQRVwjso/VGfLHDAxgrI/AAAAAAAADb0/JYYkXY4k5-Y/s1600/a6.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-l0GsQRVwjso/VGfLHDAxgrI/AAAAAAAADb0/JYYkXY4k5-Y/s1600/a6.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
9. Flip your quilt inside out through the opening. (Like you would a pillowcase) The edges and corners might need some fiddling with. I like to roll the edges on a hard surface until they are smooth and flat. <br />
<br />
10. Remove the pins in the center first, and iron with steam. Then remove the remaining pins in sections and press the entire quilt with steam. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rfHsIEtDvCo/VGfLIovy9xI/AAAAAAAADb8/8y3SI2wJm9Q/s1600/a7.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rfHsIEtDvCo/VGfLIovy9xI/AAAAAAAADb8/8y3SI2wJm9Q/s1600/a7.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
11. Hand stitch the opening closed. <br />
<br />
<i>* I am not a fan of hand sewing at ALL, in fact I avoid it all costs. But for this project I definitely recommend hand sewing the opening closed. You need to use a loose whipstitch and you might need to do a bit of fiddling/tucking while you sew so that you have a straight line. This only takes about 5 minutes so I believe it's worth it. </i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zMnnm9hMda0/VGfLKKv56_I/AAAAAAAADcE/UZFBqt0kK7k/s1600/a8.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zMnnm9hMda0/VGfLKKv56_I/AAAAAAAADcE/UZFBqt0kK7k/s1600/a8.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<i> See how the hand-stitches are barely noticeable? If I had done this by machine the line would not be straight and I would have to stitch all around the whole project and it's not too pretty ;c) </i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bWJ2973WEq8/VGfLKVfkJ-I/AAAAAAAADcI/ArGMmctOTyg/s1600/a9.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bWJ2973WEq8/VGfLKVfkJ-I/AAAAAAAADcI/ArGMmctOTyg/s1600/a9.bmp" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
12. Finally, Quilt as desired.<br />
<br />
I've found that I tend to OVERquilt all of my projects. . . . it's FUN, but it's not the best LOOKING option most of the time. I am going for a less-is-more approach these days. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aw2YXsVEgRA/VGfL-kz-RcI/AAAAAAAADdM/DGygCC9T3JA/s1600/b5.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aw2YXsVEgRA/VGfL-kz-RcI/AAAAAAAADdM/DGygCC9T3JA/s1600/b5.bmp" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
I started by quilting a swirl/feather in the borders. Then I stitched-in-ditch in the 1" inner border. Finally I did an echo/crosshatch pattern in the center using the patchwork fabric as a guide. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jmnERkv57Tc/VGfL7lEu7vI/AAAAAAAADdE/d3yZ3p3RKiI/s1600/b4.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jmnERkv57Tc/VGfL7lEu7vI/AAAAAAAADdE/d3yZ3p3RKiI/s1600/b4.bmp" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
If you would like to try to use this quilting design - Start by drawing your curved stem with chalk or erasable marker. Quilt each swirl, and then add feather or two right afterwards, then move up the spine until you get to the next swirl. Easy Peasy! <br />
<br />
