Crown Royal Quilt Finished!

This pattern can be purchased here:    https://www.craftsy.com/quilting/patterns/royal-star-/194359

I made this quilt as a birthday gift for my friend Bill Anderson. His son, Mark Anderson was my senior prom date. We were also in show choir together and he was my dance partner senior year. Mark and I were very good friends growing up and I came to know and love his parents, Bill and Sandy.
Evidentally they had been saving/collecting crown royal bags for quite some time now. When I found out they were saving them I offered to make a quilt out of them. More literally I JUMPED at the opportunity. Making a crown royal bag quilt has been on my bucket list before I even started quilting.

I tried a few different ways of cutting up the CR bags, but this is what I found worked best. See the serged seams on the bags are on the outside?! If you hold the two pieces of fabric together, and cut just the seam off, you will basically be cutting out both sides at one time. Once I figured this out (yes, i'm slow) things went much more quickly! LOL
So here you can see all the pieces of the bag. This can be done with 2 cuts. Cut off both serged seams, and you will get your 3 pieces like this.
Of course this is AFTER you cut off the drawstring area.

Deconstruction of the bags is detailed in my PDF Pattern

I looked around for the perfect fabrics at Jo-anns. . no luck (suprise surprise, I know) I ended up going to WV Quilts in Barboursville and they have some lovely tone-on-tones that went perfectly with the bags. The gold/yellow that's used in the embroidery of the bags is a pale shiny yellow. I wanted to go a bit darker for the quilt. More of an orange-y yellow. This quilt is for a man, so I thought the darker gold would be more appropriate than a pale, feminine yellow. I think I made the right decision. . I really like the way it turned out.

**Update, - - - Many people have asked me what Fabric I use for my Crown Royal Quilts.   The fabric I have used on EVERY SINGLE CROWN ROYAL quilt is "The Gallery - Illusions by Choice Fabrics Inc"  This is quilt-shop quality but, thankfully, replinished at my local quilt shop  (WV Quilt)
The Gold is the same brand.  I'm sure you can find this fabric online somewhere.  ;c) *****

Here's the finished top. The CR logos are used in all of the STAR blocks in this quilt.  The name of the block used for this quilt is called a "sawtooth star."  You can go and look it up yourself and do your own math and make the quilt yourself,  (which is the FUN part for some people!)

Or, you can just go ahead and download my PDF pattern,https://www.craftsy.com/quilting/patterns/royal-star-/194359  I have already done the math for you!   YOu don't have to think, just cut and sew ;c)  =cP

The inner sashing is the actual sides of the CR bags. I had to sew two strips together to get the fabric wide enough. I ran out of sides so on the outer edges of the sashing (inner-most border) I used quilt fabric. The points of the stars are also quilt fabric.

(If you download my Pattern, I give you options to use EITHER quilt fabric OR crown royal bag fabric in areas of the quilt, and combinations of both options.)
Here we are quilting the quilt! This quilted up super fast on my new machine ;c) It just took me a couple hours, if that.

You don't want a really dense quilting motif with this pattern.   Where the fabrics are mixed and there are LOTS of weird seams, it's best to do an all-over meander or similar motif.

Quilt is now washed and dried and I took a couple more photos!

Again, if you are interested in making this quilt - I have created a detailed pattern/tutorial in an 8 page booklet with 7 different size options -  my quilt pattern is available as a PDF instant download only.  Thank you for your understanding.

The PDF pattern is not created for printing.   Please create your quilt masterpiece by reading the directions directly from your computer or mobile device.    You can jot down important bits, if necessary, with a scrap piece of paper and pencil.

Please save your expensive printer ink and paper!  Quilt from your computer !

  5. Love the quilt. I had a friend ask me just the other day if I would make something similar for him. Told him I would try to do something with all his bags if I could figure it out. Just need to know how you made your points for your stars. I'm actually very new to quilting and need lots of advice.

  7. I am looking for someone to make me a crown royal shirt out of the many bags i have. Can you help or lead me to someone that can do it. I want a long sleeve shirt with both the inside of the shirt and the outside looking the same. I saw one on a guy but never got a picture. He had it made in asia while overseas and wouldn't sell it to me. I'm not sure where to look for help. Love your quilts and may have to settle for one of those. my email is gpjr@comcast.net my name is Gary Michael

  10. Did you wash & dry the CR bags before cutting them? If so, did you also wash the background and backing material?
    thanks

  11. I am thinking of using the drawstrings to tie the quilt. I do not want to go through the center of the CR block and I thing all 4 corners would be too much. Any suggestions on where to place the ties?

    ReplyDelete
  12. No I do not prewash my fabrics, I wash the whole quilt once it's finished.

Good luck using the drawstrings to tie the quilt. They are very thick. you're going to need a BIG hole and a BIG needle for that job! ;c)

    1. I am excited to be making this quilt for a gift for the "man who has everything"!
      I am curious though,
Did you have any trouble with the purple from the bags fading onto your yellow fabric?
      thanks,

  13. Did you have to put something on the back of the crown royal bags or did you just sew them like any other material.. ie: you have to put something on the back of a tshirt to make a tshirt quilt, i was just wondering if the bags were the same way!

I am making two quilts one for my uncle and his son.

    1. NO, I don't use any fusible interfacing on the back of my crown bag fabrics. . . (like I do for T-shirts)
They are't really that stretchy. . they are NOT knits. . but they certainly aren't like normal wovens either.

If you are cutting squares, rectangles that are at least 2". . I would say you're okay. . but if you try to use the bag fabrics for triangles, you may want to fuse some lightweight interfacing on the back first.
      Good luck!

  14. How many bags does take to make to complete a queen quilt

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm working on a queen size quilt right now. If I put a crown royal logo in each of the star blocks and cornerstones, it would have required 98 bags.
BUT, I didn't have that many, so I just put the crown royal logos in every OTHER block. . so . . half that many ;c) It's up to YOU how many bags you will need. Count the cornerstones and blocks and that's how many I usually use.

  23. Also sis you use starch or any kind of backing on the CR bags

    ReplyDelete

    1. no starch and no backing
The bag fabric is kind of thick, and holds it's shape fine for my purposes. However, I DO use regular quilt fabric for pieces smaller 2"

  28. Do you have the color names or the id codes for the purple and yellow fabric. I have looked at choice fabrics but they have several purples and yellows listed. I do not have a quilt shop local to me so I want to make sure what I order online will coordinate as best as possible. Thank you :)

    1. Unfortunately, they do not make the yellow/gold anymore - I bought every last inch of it from every online site I could find!
But the purple is called "Illusions by Choice Fabrics" and it is Grape 158680

For the Gold/yellow - I've used many different kinds - they make a yellow/gold in the same line as the Illusions/Choice Fabrics. . . but there are two shades - a very yellow/yellow, and a very gold/gold almost orange. I have used both options, and I have found that the orange-ish yellow looks better than the yellow/yellow.

Just keep in mind, in my experience it is best to not try to match your gold to the gold in the thread used in the bags. It needs to be significantly darker to look decent in a quilt. . . . GOLD. . .. or more orange/yellow.

Good luck! and thanks for your comment.
