New Crown Royal Quilt

So here they are:  My latest Crown Royal Quilts are complete! 

This is the "block" - and because these blocks are so BIG, these quilts are not as versatile as the old crown royal quilt pattern.  https://www.craftsy.com/quilting/patterns/royal-star-/194359 These are only available in Twin-size or bigger.  

Here are the "special" crown royal quilt bags /logos that were used in this quilt.  I used these special colors and textures for the cornerstones, so that the main blocks would stay consistent. 

 Here is the center quilt pre-borders

 For the border star blocks, the lights and darks were reversed.   I've made SOOO many of them the opposite way, I screwed up a gazillion times and had to do ALOT of seam-ripping/unpicking ;c)
For the borders stars I used the gold/leather crown royal quilt.  and purple background.

 Here are the two finished tops!

 I used the leftover bag material from the BACK and SIDES of the crown royal bags for the sashing.   For all the other purple areas I used a mottled purple quilting fabric.

 Here are the two quilt tops on the wall, without flash ;c)  My camera seems to have trouble capturing the color purple.

 Here is me quilting the quilt with my big-guy machine ;c)  Yes, I think the name of my sewing machine is "big guy" . .  I never claimed to be creative.  LOL

 For the backing I used a purple minky fleece.    When I ordered it from fabric.com, I thought it was just as dark as the purple quilting fabric and the crown royal bags.   But when it showed up in the mail it was a bit lighter.   Like a lavender or something.

 Here are the 3 quilts finished!   I used gold binding on one, and purple binding on the other.

I made this quilt as a birthday gift for my friend Bill Anderson. His son, Mark Anderson was my senior prom date. We were also in show choir together and he was my dance partner senior year. Mark and I were very good friends growing up and I came to know and love his parents, Bill and Sandy.

Evidentally they had been saving/collecting crown royal bags for quite some time now. When I found out they were saving them I offered to make a quilt out of them. More literally I JUMPED at the opportunity. Making a crown royal bag quilt has been on my bucket list before I even started quilting.

I tried a few different ways of cutting up the CR bags, but this is what I found worked best. See the serged seams on the bags are on the outside?! If you hold the two pieces of fabric together, and cut just the seam off, you will basically be cutting out both sides at one time. Once I figured this out (yes, i'm slow) things went much more quickly! LOL

So here you can see all the pieces of the bag. This can be done with 2 cuts. Cut off both serged seams, and you will get your 3 pieces like this.

Of course this is AFTER you cut off the drawstring area.

I looked around for the perfect fabrics at Jo-anns. . no luck (suprise surprise, I know) I ended up going to WV Quilts in Barboursville and they have some lovely tone-on-tones that went perfectly with the bags. The gold/yellow that's used in the embroidery of the bags is a pale shiny yellow. I wanted to go a bit darker for the quilt. More of an orange-y yellow. This quilt is for a man, so I thought the darker gold would be more appropriate than a pale, feminine yellow. I think I made the right decision. . I really like the way it turned out.

**Update, - - - Many people have asked me what Fabric I use for my Crown Royal Quilts.   The fabric I have used on EVERY SINGLE CROWN ROYAL quilt is "The Gallery - Illusions by Choice Fabrics Inc"  This is quilt-shop quality but, thankfully, replinished at my local quilt shop  (WV Quilt)
The Gold is the same brand.  I'm sure you can find this fabric online somewhere.  ;c) *****

Here's the finished top. The CR logos are used in all of the STAR blocks in this quilt.  The name of the block used for this quilt is called a "sawtooth star."  You can go and look it up yourself and do your own math and make the quilt yourself,  (which is the FUN part for some people!)

The inner sashing is the actual sides of the CR bags. I had to sew two strips together to get the fabric wide enough. I ran out of sides so on the outer edges of the sashing (inner-most border) I used quilt fabric. The points of the stars are also quilt fabric.

 (If you download my Pattern, I give you options to use EITHER quilt fabric OR crown royal bag fabric in areas of the quilt, and combinations of both options.)

Here we are quilting the quilt! This quilted up super fast on my new machine ;c) It just took me a couple hours, if that.

You don't want a really dense quilting motif with this pattern.   Where the fabrics are mixed and there are LOTS of weird seams, it's best to do an all-over meander or similar motif.
